With an estimated population of one million Catholics, the diocese of Essen has multiple communities of Catholics speaking languages other than German who gather every Sunday and weekdays to celebrate the Eucharist in their native languages. The desire to have the same opportunity of celebrating the holy Mass according to own culture and language pushed some English-speaking Africans to seek a community of their own. On the 21st of June 2001, this request was granted by the then bishop of Essen, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Hubert Luthe († 2014).
The Community is made up of Catholics from English-speaking countries of Africa. Presently we have members of Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Every Sunday and during the week, members come from Essen and its environs to celebrate the holy Mass and participate in other spiritual exercises.

The celebration of the Eucharist, and other forms of catholic devotions have remained at the center of the life of the community. With Sunday and weekly celebrations of the Eucharist, the community continues to realize this objective.
Belief in the presence of Jesus Christ the Lord in the Eucharist is given special reverence in the spiritual life of the community. The first Friday of every month provides special opportunity for members of the community to express their belief and faith in the real presence of Christ in the blessed Eucharist through Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Devotion to the holy Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary is another form of prayer around which the life of the community rotates. This takes place on Sundays with particular reference to the months of May and October.
